🏆 Who Won Tech Law Trivia? Finally!

There is perhaps no honor or award in tech policy more prestigious than winning 1st place at the Foundry’s Internet Law Trivia night. We’re happy to provide this recap for those unfortunate souls who could not attend or the nostalgics wanting to relive the fateful experience.

The night was filled with nail bitingly close scores, unexpected guesses, and dramatic comebacks. This was no walk in the park for our 12 teams who had to fight for their spot at the top, and there was no shortage of drama. Our 9th annual trivia evening started with introductions by Foundry Fellows Ekene Chuks-Okeke and Katelyn Ringrose, who introduced renowned quizmaster Kurt Opsahl to start the competition.

The combatants knew that the coveted first place stein was up for grabs and blood was in the water. The defending champions, Meta’s team Zuck’s Chain, were playing without last year’s captain Bijan Madhani. FPF’s team, the 3rd Party Coconuts, might have had their crown Jule(s Polonetsky) but the team was hamstrung without past winner Amie Stepanovich.

This had the makings for a new champion to be crowned, and while everyone who attended was a winner in our hearts, only one team could take home the coveted first place beer stein.

After several years of concerted efforts, upstart team KOSAnut Tree, led by dynamic duo Ashkhen Kazaryan and Jennifer Huddleston, returned to take the gold, missing only four questions for the entire night (who cares about Carpenter v. United States anyway?) And despite being relegated to a remote section of the arena they made their voices heard. (Literally! Who knew heckling was allowed?)

Coming up in second, neck-and-neck behind them, Zuck’s Chain, Meta’s finest playing on their home turf, put up a tremendous fight as the runners up with a single point difference!

And for third place, a three-way tie was settled by one team getting the closest to the distance defining precise geolocation data, crowning Google’s team Gemini’s Hallucinations the final third place winner.

CCIA’s crew, Still Messing With Texas, once a veritable Trivia dynasty, returned to make a run at the stein with inaugural Foundry fellow Ali Sternburg at the helm. Captained by Jake Laperruque, CDT fielded a large team of newcomers to Trivia who made their mark by winning “Best Team Name” with team More Than Meets the AI, chosen by the night’s Foundry Fellow judges, Aditi Rukhaiyar and Nicole Timofeevski.

An honorable mention goes out to the impressive final round performance from Poorly Moderated Timeline who was the only team to get every point, catapulting them into the top five. And for teams who didn’t get first, second, or even third, you’re all still winners in our eyes: 10^26 Flops, Poorly Moderated Timeline, Crowd Strikes Back, Still Messing With Texas, Moral Friction, Moore’s Minions, 3rd Party Coconuts, and More Than Meets the AI. And finally, for bringing up the rear, thank you to Large Language Lawyers for your efforts, the judging was harsh we know, but better luck next time!

Kurt, his smoking jacket, inevitable technical issues, and the Foundry’s Tech Policy Trivia will return next year. Until then, cheers to everyone who rode this wild ride of Trivia Night and brush up on your knowledge. We hope to see you ace it with your tech policy expertise at the next annual showdown!
